PUSKAR GROWS HIS ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP

My name is Puskar, and I’m a graduate of Kopila Valley School.

Today, I want to tell you about my environmental initiative and how you can make a difference for our planet, too.

In our region of Nepal, there’s a lack of waste management systems, and many people burn their trash. There’s a shortage of widespread knowledge about recycling and sustainable practices. A lot of trees are being cut down to build wider roads, and the pollution in Surkhet is getting worse and worse as the city grows.

While studying at Kopila, I was a member of the Sustainability Club and participated in many community garbage clean-ups, tree plantings, and awareness outreach programs. I learned about issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. Going to this school that has been built from the earth and is surrounded by native plants, I really felt like I was in nature. I would sit under a tree with my school book in hand and listen to the wind rustling the trees.

I graduated from Kopila Valley feeling empowered to make informed decisions and take actions that contribute to a greener, more equitable world. I decided to start an environmental initiative called HAMRO. It means ours in Nepali, a simple reminder of our responsibility to this planet we live on.

A young man and a man plant seedlings in a garden.

I brought together more than 20 young changemakers like me from across our Surkhet valley who are also passionate about sustainability. We are all students representing different schools and colleges. At HAMRO, we work closely with the local government and community to promote recycling and find solutions to the waste management crisis. We’ve run surveys in our local education sector, health institutions, businesses, and the political sector for their views and feedback on Surkhet’s waste management.

We also educate our community about climate change, and host neighborhood clean-ups. We tape signs on our backs and pick up trash, leading by example and encouraging others to join in. At both the local and national levels, we advocate for sustainable policies to have a positive impact on our planet—and future generations.

I want to thank you for your support of my education at Kopila Valley. It is because of you that I am working to save our planet from environmental degradation. You have shown me that change can start right here, with me. Will you teach more students in Nepal about sustainability and support their futures? Your donations to BlinkNow help students like me pursue our dreams for a better world.

Many thanks,
Puskar
