Even so, I was hopeful.

I had my doubts, and I had my fears.

“Even so, I was hopeful. What do we have after all, if we don’t have hope?

“In one moment, getting accepted into United World College (UWC) felt so far out of my reach. I started the application process as a shot in the dark. No expectations. But each step of the application process forced me to do some soul-searching. It forced me to know myself better. And the more I learned about myself, the less I doubted myself. It was during this process of self-reflection that I realized how far I have come as a person, beginning from such a humble background.

“I grew up playing in mud and dirt in a remote, mountainous village in western Nepal. Despite the geographic isolation, we still had a community school. But there were no proper classrooms, so we used to study on the open ground. Classes, too, were not regular. There was hardly any learning in such an environment.

“Our already struggling family was further mired in difficulties after a death in the family. Kopila Valley sympathized with our situation and took me in when I was five. Since then, I’ve always strived to make the best use of the opportunities given to me.

“I became class captain, joined the school’s football team, got elected as the president of the school student council, and recently widened my ambition to set sight at UWC. The highly rigorous selection process was nerve-wracking. I laid bare my soul while answering the questions, and eventually, it helped me get to know myself better, and I emerged as a more determined person. Getting into UWC was a distant dream. And it wouldn’t have been a reality without the unwavering support and encouragement I received along the way. For that, I’m forever grateful.

“When I set my foot at UWC for the first time, more than for myself, I’m excited because I’ll be able to bring happiness to the faces of others – Maggie Mom, Kopila family, my family back home, and the donors who have been supporting us at every turn. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
